Cinema – Mary Queen of Scots (15)

A heartfelt and serious-minded film about the artful power politics of the rival queens.  Both Elizabeth and Mary are shown as enemies who also have respect for each other in their similarities, that is, two women who are lonely and surrounded by duplicitous men.  The historical moments of invention, for example, the fictional face-to-face meeting only add to the tension and to our understanding of the characters and make the film more engaging.  Two excellent performances by the lead actors make this a fascinating and powerful account of the feud between the two monarchs.
